He was born in 1972 in Tamil Nadu, India, and his parents were both researchers. His father’s name is Subramania Ranganathan, a professor and the head of the chemistry department at the IIT in Kanpur, and his mother’s name is Darshan Ranganathan, an organic chemist.
Anand Ranganathan graduated from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry. He then traveled to Cambridge, UK, on a Nehru Centenary Scholarship, where he earned a BA (Tripos) in Natural Sciences as well as an MA and a Ph.D. He is aged 51 and is a Hindu by religion. His net worth isn’t known.
Anand Ranganathan is the author of three novels, most recently ‘The Rat Eater’ (co-authored) and his wife Sheetal Ranganathan a graduate from AIIMS and XIM. She is a columnist covering topics on global health and science outreach and is also the Vice President and Global Head of Life Sciences Operations in a multinational professional services firm.
His career
After completing his career, Anand Ranganathan returned to India to work at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Delhi. He oversaw his lab there for 16 years as a Staff Research Scientist.
He began working at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Special Center for Molecular Medicine in 2015, and in 2019 he was promoted to full professor. His lab specializes in Directed Evolution and pathogenesis, with a focus on Malaria and TB.
Anand Ranganathan regularly participates in debates on politics, media, and science on television. He has written columns for Swarajya, DNA, Firstpost, and Newslaundry. He serves as Swarajya’s Consultant Editor as well. He wrote 200 peer-reviewed articles and a multitude of books.
