Tanuj was born into a well-to-do family in Mumbai.
He is the only child of the veteran actress, Rati Agnihotri.
He was inclined towards acting and filmmaking from a very young age.
Tanuj received his first video camera when he was eight years old, and he started making short films with it.
As a child, Tanuj was a little overweight, wore glasses, and used to stammer a lot.
He learned acting from Kishore Namit Kapoor’s acting studio.

Tanuj started his career as an assistant director with films like “Aao Wish Karein” (2009) and “Chance Pe Dance” (2010).
He worked as an assistant director for a year, and by the end of the shooting, he was certain that even though he enjoyed being behind the camera, it was being in front of the camera that really appealed to him.
He made his acting debut in 2013 with the Bollywood film “Luv U Soniyo” in which he played the role of ‘Mark Briganza.’
His first two films “Luv U Soniyo” and “Purani Jeans” failed miserably at the box office.
In 2016, he featured in the erotic romantic drama “One Night Stand” opposite Sunny Leone. The film performed average at the box office.
In 2017, Tanuj bagged the role of ‘Vayu Raghavan’ in the Amazon Original Series “Inside Edge.” His acting in the series was appreciated by the viewers.
Subsequently, he appeared in ZEE5’s web series “Poison” and “Code M.”
Apart from being an actor, he is also a producer and a writer and has created many short films & documentaries under his production banner “Pin Drop Violence.”
Tanuj has also been a part of the Kota Royals Rajasthan team in the game reality show “Box Cricket League.”
In 2015, when there was news about his parents’ split, Tanuj played cupid for them. He made all the efforts to bring his parents together once again. Reportedly, in 2015, his mother, Rati Agnihotri filed a domestic violence complaint against his father, Anil Virwani with the Mumbai Police.
He is fond of animals and owns a pet dog, Snowy.
Tanuj is very particular about his fitness and visits the gym regularly.
He was in a relationship with Kamal Haasan‘s daughter, Akshara Haasan from 2013 to 2017. The duo continued to remain good friends even after their breakup.
Reportedly, Tanuj was not the first choice for the film “One Night Stand.” The film was earlier offered to Rana Daggubati, who had declined the offer due to his busy schedule.
Tanuj’s mother, Rati Agnihotri, was initially not happy with her son working with Sunny Leone. However, when his mother met Sunny, she got too impressed with Sunny’s focus and dedication towards work.

Virwani is scared of reptiles, especially snakes and lizards.
During an interview, Tanuj said that he was suffering from a major OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).
Tanuj revealed in an interview that he was a very shy person.
